The MEA Leadership Development Series provides opportunities for leaders to dig deeper into their personal leadership skills. The Leadership Development Series is focused on leading both self and others by cultivating an awareness and application of key personal assets.

Based on the successes of a program called MEA Leadership Boot Camp, offered from 2014 through 2020, MEA is a taking a new approach to guide participants in their personal leadership development. This series is made up of three standalone monthlong programs. The topics of each program series are designed to be complementary to one another so individuals can choose one topic of interest or join MEA for all three.

Each series is designed for a small group of up to 15 people to allow for group discussion, personal feedback from the presenter, and direct feedback from each participant’s manager.

This series is currently on hold while MEA assesses member needs in this area.

Series 1: How to Get the Most Out of Your Team


In the first series, we will be focusing on the strengths of leaders, and how to walk the line between following conventional leadership wisdom and breaking those rules to get the most out of your team. This series will explore Gallop research based on more than 30 million people who both lead and report to leaders at work. The facilitator will be Barb Dusek, who has over 30 years of experience working with leadership programs.

The CliftonStrengths assessment, previously known as Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment, provided with this series, unveils the top strengths of each participant, and shows ways for the participant to better utilize these strengths at work and at home.

Series 1 Webinars

  • Introduction, Welcome, and Main Concepts

    The first webinar in this series will be an introduction to the full program. Participants will get an overview of the main concepts to be covered, a full rundown of the expectations of them, and an opportunity to meet their fellow participants.

  • CliftonStrengths Assessment – Personal Results and Best Practices

    The second webinar in this series will delve deeper into the participants’ personal assessment results. The facilitator will review the specific results of each participant and give recommendations for how to apply those results in personal and professional life. This webinar will also include ways to work better with people who have different strengths.

  • Part 1 – When to Break the Rules

    The third webinar in this series begins to explore the core content of the book, First, Break All the Rules. The facilitator will review some common-sense rules that are generally accepted for leadership, and why these rules are often not the best ways to lead your team. In conjunction with the book rules, this webinar will also cover utility-specific content, and recommendations from the expert facilitator.

  • Part 2 – When to Break the Rules

    The fourth webinar in this series will continue the content discussion from webinar three and conclude the entire series. Participants will finish the series by laying out a leadership plan to follow on the job with the tips and skills they have learned in this series.

Series 2: Change Your Habits to Further Your Career


This series focuses on successful practices that anyone can start doing to focus on career development. The content is derived from extensive research from within the utility industry and from the wider corporate world. Each participant will have the opportunity to develop a personalized career plan and refine the best ways to plan for the future. The facilitator of this series is Ric Hinkie former MEA President and author of Fast Forward Your Career.

The personalized career plan included with this series is a detailed, written-out plan developed by author Ric Hinkie that will help each participant work out what they want from their career, and determine the steps they need to follow to make it a reality. The facilitator will work with each participant directly to provide insight and recommendations for their specific plan.

Series 2 Webinars

  • Career Development Plans – Personal Plans and Best Practices

    The second webinar in this series will delve deeper into the participants’ personal career development plans. The facilitator will review the specific plans of each participant and give recommendations for how to turn these plans into reality, and overall best practices for anyone to advance their career.

  • Part 1 – Creating New Habits

    The third webinar in this series begins to explore the core content of the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The facilitator will review each of the habits outlined in the book, and review why they are so important to be effective and efficient in your career. In conjunction with the book rules, this webinar will also cover utility-specific content, and recommendations from the expert facilitator.

  • Part 2 – Creating New Habits

    The fourth webinar in this series will continue the content discussion from webinar three and conclude the entire series. Participants will finish the series by laying out a leadership plan to follow on the job with the tips and skills they have learned in this series.

Series 3: How to Become a Better Leader


Focusing on behaving like a leader, the series delves into core and adaptive leadership skills and gives new insights into how to develop and utilize them as a leader. The facilitator, Julie Berg, has over 30 years of experience working as an employee consultant and as a leadership coach.

The 360° Refined™, an assessment from TalentSmart®, personal assessment included with this series uncovers where each participant’s leadership skills stand currently, and what they can do to maximize these skills in the workplace.

    The third webinar in this series begins to explore the core content of the book, Leadership 2.0. The facilitator will review the core leadership skills covered in the book, what they mean for utility leaders, and how to improve these core skills in your day-to-day job. In conjunction with the book rules, this webinar will also cover utility-specific content, and recommendations from the expert facilitator.

  • Your Adaptive Leadership

    The fourth webinar in this series will continue the content discussion from webinar three with a discussion on adaptive leadership and conclude the entire series. Participants will finish the series by laying out a leadership plan to follow on the job with the tips and skills they have learned in this series.
